Time in Terlingua, Texas
We actually went to Terlingua in November to attend the Tolbert's Chili Cook-off that takes places each year and man is that the time to go. Chris and I had been talking for years about going, but each November we'd come up with an excuse not to or were just too damn busy to make it happen. But this year, the stars aligned and we bit the bullet and made the long 8 hour trip to Terlingua.
This trip was the farthest west I'd been in Texas and with the amount of driving you do (8 hours from Austin for us) it feels like you should be at least two states over by the time you make it there. But despite the drives length, it's vast and beautiful and literally never gets old to me. If you want to unwind, be free and enjoy the journey, you go to West Texas.
Honestly, the Chili Cook-off was probably one of the biggest highlights of my year (besides getting married, DUH!) We had THE best time and I'm sad that it took us this long to get out there for it. We had way too much camp food, sat around a fire every night, got to judge some chili, drink some beers and be surrounded by the kindest people in one of the most beautiful reaches of Texas.
While we spent most of our time eating and drinking at the cook-off, a few notable places we managed to sneak off to were:
- Terlingua Trading Company -a great place to find all kinds of goods to take home with you! AND you can grab a beer inside and live your best life on the porch for a while.
- La Kiva - though we didn't grab food here, we did enjoy getting a few margaritas and hanging out outside on their patio!
- Restaurant Rio Bravo - honestly, their enchiladas might be some of the best I've ever had, but a word to the wise...they're pretty spicy!
